Dear Colleagues,
Since mid-April, over 140 persons have been identified in 16 states with Salmonella Saintpaul, an uncommon serotype. Preliminary investigation by state health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has implicated tomatoes. New York City is currently investigating Salmonella cases to see if any are related to the outbreak.
Although precise information on the source and the type of tomatoes involved in the outbreak is not yet available, preliminary information suggests that raw red plum, raw red Roma, or raw round red tomatoes are the cause. The FDA is advising consumers to limit their tomato consumption to cherry tomatoes; grape tomatoes; tomatoes sold with the vine still attached; tomatoes grown at home.
