A medley of urban gardening, experimental cooking, family medicine, and my life.

I’m a big advocate of healthcare for Latino immigrants in the US, and I find this story particularly striking. My dad works in real estate in Oakland, California and fixes up foreclosed houses for resale. There are a couple groups of Mexican guys that work on the houses. I met one of them, Romero, a few weeks ago when I was out visiting. Romero is a sweet guy - from Mexico City - and is a skilled carpenter, builder, and plumber. A few days ago, he was underneath the house working on some plumbing, and a huge plank fell onto his back. He spent $150 for a chiropractor appointment, but couldn’t go to the emergency room because it was too expensive. So he drove down 500 miles to Tijuana to seek medical care. I sort of want to convince him to move to San Francisco.
