Rafi in Uganda
Rafi’s finishing his internal medicine residency by spending a month practicing medicine in rural Uganda. He’s been blogging about his experiences in African medicine, and I’ve found his thoughts deeply moving and insightful. He comes back to the Bronx today and here’s his take home:
“I hope to return to this place or someplace similar to it in the future to...

Etsy is where I go when it’s 1 am and I’m having a slow night in the ICU. I especially love their color search.
Raising chickens in New York City
For the record, I think I am starting a trend. Or, at least, I am very trendy.
A Body's Burden: what's in you?
An interesting article series Marta sent me about accumulation of synthetic chemicals in the body. As part of her MPH, she’s doing an intership with the California EPA this summer working on the implementation of their state-wide biomonitoring program, so more info to come.

Boiling Water a la Cooks Illustrated
Ever since Marta bought me the Cooks Illustrated cookbook ‘The Best Recipe’ for my birthday, I’ve been reading a lot of Cooks Illustrated. Made a really good french onion soup. Some vegetable enchiladas. An orange salad. So when I came across this mock recipe for boiling water a la Cooks Illustrated, I couldn’t stop laughing.

Not the only worms in the apartment
Despite the fact that I made the dubious decision to buy a 25 lb sago palm two weeks before I moved, I’m starting to realize it wasn’t such a bad idea in the first place… John recently told me about a food show that gave the nutritional value of the sago palm. And eatingasia.com just printed a recipe for the sago worms!

No Zoning Restrictions For Sprouts in Boerum Hill
I feel like now that I live in Brooklyn and am thinking about having chickens, it seems only reasonable that I start with tending to something smaller - something like sprouts, given the recent alfalfa sprout recall. I came across this guide on how to grow your own sprouts.
” All you need is a mason jar, some cheese cloth, a rubber band, and some alfalfa seeds.”
I have all of those...

Ben called me last night on his way home from work, to leave me the message of the day. If you listen to his message, it’s just him yelling the now classic line “Chicken Shit Punch.” Simulscribe, however, always trying to get the upper hand, just cracked me up. Somehow they seem eerily aware of Ben’s intentions after a long day of work. Check out their text verbatim:

Top 10 reasons chickens are clearly better than...
1. Your pet makes your breakfast. 2. Chickens eat your compost. 3. It’s like easter every day. (Full disclosure: I’ve never celebrated easter or anything, but I imagine this is what it’s gonna be like.) 4. Chicken Diapers 5. Chickens are the gateway animal for urban farming. (aka. I’m this much closer to owning a sheep.) 6. Chickens are low maintenance. (The alternative:...
This just keeps getting better!
Marta called me a little bit ago, and I just got her message:
“Hi, Arin. I’ll try to talk a little bit clear than your Dad did, I guess. But I should still mention something about making chicken sip punch.”
CHICKEN SIP PUNCH? Wow. There’s a ring to that. I have a feeling that’s a new mojito right there. Working as one of the simulscribe transcribers must really be...
Where has Simulscribe been all my life?
There’s not much that can make me laugh at 1:30am in the ICU. Except, of course, reading the Simulscribe that I just got from my dad:
“Hey, honey. It’s Dad. Just checking in, seeing how you made out today with (?) or whatever. I would make a punch with the (??) chicken shit stuff and you know, I’m happy to pay for it. You know, if it’s like 100 bucks or 150,...

Latinos' Job Fatality Rate Highest of All Workers →
I’m a big advocate of healthcare for Latino immigrants in the US, and I find this story particularly striking. My dad works in real estate in Oakland, California and fixes up foreclosed houses for resale. There are a couple groups of Mexican guys that work on the houses. I met one of them, Romero, a few weeks ago when I was out visiting. Romero is a sweet guy - from Mexico City - and is a...
